The answer key:

1) Corrosion occurs when a particular substance is exposed at a certain temperature to a given media. What is the corrosion rate (in mils parts per year) when Superferritic Stainless Steel is exposed to ammonium bromide at 25-75°F?

< 20 mpy
< 2 mpy
20-50 mpy
1-10 mpy
> 50 mpy

2) Using Advanced Search, which of the following does not have a PDL rating (stability) of 3, when Generic Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is exposed to it?

Cellosolve
Propylene Dichloride
Aluminum Fluoride
Benzaldehyde
Diethyl Ether

3) Using the equation plotter in the Chemical Properties Handbook, what is the vapor pressure (psi) of Bromine (an inorganic substance) at 375K?

4) Using Advanced Search, which of the following substances has an OSHA mass permissible exposure limit of 19 mg/m3 and a volume basis exposure limit of 5 ppmv? (Hint: search using 5 ppmv)

formamide
butyronitrile
camphor
aniline
diphenyl ether

5) Scenario: A scientist is working on a formulation to create a new perfume. The scientist needs to identify and evaluate alcohols with a boiling point that falls between 100-200° C, and a melting point between 50-100° C. Use Advanced Search and the following instructions to answer the question below:

a. For the first Search Criteria, select keyword (default) in the Category drop down list. When you select it, enter the value alcohol in the Keyword box.

b. For the second Search Criteria, select physical constants in the Category drop down list. In Field Name, select boiling point. For operator select is between (>=/<=). For Numberic Range enter 100-200°.

c. For the third Search Criteria, select physical constants in the Category drop down list. In Field Name, select melting point. For operator select is between (>=/<=). For Numberic Range enter 50-100°.

d. Click the Search Button

e. Nine books are shown to have tables with the information you are looking for.

Question: Using the table from the first book on the list, which of the following types of alcohol does not match the criteria the scientist is looking for (melting point is between 50-100° C, and boiling point is between 100-200° C)?

acetaldehyde ammonia (aminoethyl alcohol)
trichloroisopropyl alcohol
trichloro-tert-butyl alcohol
isobutyl alcohol
tert-butyl carbinol
