Helpful Hints & Tips on Using Knovel

Criteria for the Knovelization of Tables
  • Knovelization has to improve the access to the data by making data searchable in our relational database, which accompanies searchable PDF text. For example: A unit conversion table or a table with bolt thread sizes would not be knovelized because very few users would search on conversion factors or thread sizes. However, a table with critical points of organic substances would be knovelized to make it searchable on critical points (numerically) and on chemical names (keywords).
  • Knovelization should make it easier to view and navigate through the data, e.g., by sorting. This is especially important in large tables.
  • A table should contain a large amount of valuable, hard-to-find data to make it worthwhile to knovelize.
  • The data in the table should be consistent to minimize the normalization effort.
